Have you ever wondered what the 1960s would have been like had World War I never ended? Probably not. Yet here's Iron Storm, a first- and third-person shooter that attempts to answer the question no one asked. Its story doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and it's sometimes frustratingly difficult, but Iron Storm is a reasonably successful action game, which is what counts.The game takes place in Germany during 1964, which is apparently the 50th year of the ongoing first World War.

And even if you're not interested in WWI, you'll feel right at home with the game, because the advanced technology and modern fantasy weapons available to you give the whole undertaking an atmosphere not too different from that of any other generic shooter. The only real references to the Great War are the occasional mustard gas grenade and the fact that about a third of the game's levels are set in trenches--somewhat improbably, since much of the equipment on display in the game (such as portable communication devices, modern tanks, and advanced artillery) are all technical innovations that made trench warfare obsolete. You might as well just pretend it's a slightly off-kilter World War II game or a bizarre version of the Vietnam War fought against Germans in Western Europe.

Iron Storm's gameplay is a cross between a straightforward shooter and an adventure game. Though there's a lot of gunplay, the game also has a fair number of puzzles to solve. In fact, the game's six levels are for the most part nonlinear, often requiring you to visit certain sections repeatedly and sometimes offering multiple ways for you to complete your objectives. The puzzles are generally environmental and often involve figuring out what needs to manipulated or blown up in order to proceed. Your goals--given to you via earpiece radio by an operative back at home base--are often a little too sketchy, though computer terminals scattered around the levels provide some useful hints.

The puzzle elements aren't overwhelmingly difficult, but they do slow the game down for anyone expecting an uninterrupted shooting spree. We did encounter a specific scripting bug on one level in which a door that should have opened didn't, forcing us to reload a saved game from the previous level and replay a large section of the game. If you run into the same problem, you may even become uncertain about whether an obstacle is a puzzle or just a bug later in the game, so it's a good idea to save early and save often, rather than rely on the game's quick-save feature.

It is a historical setting and combat between realistic-looking period aircraft, about the only thing Wings of War has in common with a hardcore flight sim is that they both feature objects suspended in the air. At its default settings, the game's flight model is arcadelike and wildly forgiving (though you can tweak the controls to make them significantly more realistic, resulting in a game that's more difficult and more rewarding). It's almost impossible to stall the planes, you can bounce them off of obstacles with relative impunity, and, for the most part, they turn less like actual aircraft and more like the light cycles in Tron. They're also equipped with some distinctly non-period gear such as radar, shields, and missiles. On top of all this, the landscape is dotted with pickups that impart standard gamey bonuses like health and speed boosts. It's enough to give cranky flight sim fans a massive, collective stroke, but it's a solid foundation for a decent action game.

This simplified flight model would have benefited from mouse control. As it is, however, only keyboard and joystick controls are supported. The mouse can be used, but only to look around in cockpit view.

The game's campaign takes place across 12 huge levels, each one requiring at least an hour to complete. Rather than tell any sort of story, each level is simply a series of 20 or so vaguely connected tasks. Generally, they're doled out linearly, with your next task being assigned immediately upon completion of the current one. However, there are usually five or six optional bonus challenges that can be attempted at various points throughout each level. The variety of mission types is impressive: there's straight dogfighting, bombing runs, escort jobs, one-on-one duels, timed races, and even reconnaissance missions during which you'll snap pictures of ground targets. You'll also occasionally mount the rear gunner's position while a computer-controlled pilot flies the plane.

The tasks within a level are strung together with virtually no downtime between them, and except for the occasional timed or escort mission, you're generally free to take as long as you like to complete them. This gives you time to break off from the main fighting and scour the countryside looking for power-ups, which are either hidden inside destroyable objects, such as buildings and zeppelins, or placed inside open-ended hangars through which you need to fly. Not every enemy plane is part of a mission goal, either, and you'll often try to down a few in direct combat simply to keep them from harassing you during the mission. This open-ended structure leads to some pretty thrilling moments of risk versus reward as you fly defensively with a few planes on your tail, searching for a health or shield power-up that'll give you a better chance of finishing a particular task.

Once you've finished the campaign, there's also an instant action mode in which you can set up deathmatch or team deathmatch games with up to 29 other planes across a variety of terrain types, seasons, and times of day.

A few days ago, the second episode of Telltale’s Back to the Future adventure game became available. We’ve already given our feelings on the first superb installment. Since this is, after all, an episode, much of the game is identical to its predecessor, so this review will be primarily focused on where it differs. Also, if you haven’t played the first episode, there may be spoilers within, so be forewarned.

The game play is much the same as it had been, though there appear to have been some tweaks. For instance, there are now a handful of points in the game where you must drag or direct your point of view in order to take in a full scene and identify the appropriate target. In a game where half of the challenge comes from finding all of the interactive elements in an area, increasing the searchable area to effectively a panorama seems like a natural evolution.

Another shift seems to have come in the form of navigation. There are portions of the game where the camera sticks with your character. The orientation is locked, but as you move it stays with you. I’m not sure if this was an attempt to improve the navigation, which was a little tricky last time, or a way to keep the point of view from revealing certain locations from certain angles. (In a game with time travel, it occasionally becomes necessary to keep the camera from straying too high, too low, or too far in either direction, lest it reveal a future version of the character in a parallel plot thread. More on that later.) Regardless of the motivation, it wasn’t the most efficient decision, leading you to run blindly toward the camera until an opening in a fence lines up with you. This is a minor problem, and one that ceases to be an issue once you are familiar with the layout.
